How to Buy a Real Registered Driver's License
Over the years, law enforcement has tried many things to combat fake IDs. Holograms, dual photographs watermarks, bar-coding, and even watermarks have all been tried however, they are also defeated by sophisticated counterfeiters.
Two documents proving New York State residence are required to obtain a real or enhanced ID. Examples include your current driver's license or non-driver ID, utility bill or bank statement, or a pay stubs.
Real Documents Unit
The Real Documents Unit processes and renews licenses for people who aren't eligible for an ID card for drivers or a non-driver identification card due to medical issues. This involves reviewing a person's medical records and determining if they are safe to drive a car. If not, the license for that person may be revoked.
If a nurse or doctor treating a patient write an account that states that the patient is not able to safely drive or is not planning to drive any longer, the patient is believed to be suffering from a medical issue. This report may be used by the DMV to restrict the driver's license, or to suspend or revoke the driver's ability to drive.
To obtain a valid licensed driver's license You must present documents that prove your identity and address. These documents must be valid and current. You can use an utility bill or a bank statement to prove your current address. A copy of your Social Security card can also be used to confirm your identity and address. A letter from your doctor informing you that you are unable to drive or do not intend to drive is also acceptable.

After your application is completed, you can go to any Secretary State Driver Services facility for your photo and any tests required. After the verification and review of your documents is completed, you will receive your new permanent standard ID or DL card via mail within 15 working days.
Real Driver's Licence
The Real Driver's Licenses are a new form of identification that is in compliance with the federal Real ID Act. The act established minimum security standards for state-issued drivers' licenses, permits and ID cards and prohibits federal agencies like the Transportation Security Administration from accepting any card that doesn't conform to these standards. In October 2017, the DMV began real IDs being issued, which look different from standard driver's licenses and include a picture of a star printed on the back. The enhanced ID comes with a radio frequency (RF) chip that authorities can read electronically at a border checkpoint from up to 30 feet. The IDs have a machine-readable area and barcode that authorities can read when the RFID chips are not working.
For domestic travel those who do not want to get Real ID can use their existing license or one that's expired. If they intend to travel or enter a federal facility they'll need an alternative government-approved ID, like a passport or military identification. They can also buy a passport from their nearest post office for less than what they would pay for a Real ID at the DMV.
If you do decide to get a Real or enhanced ID, you will need to go to the DMV office to apply. You can't apply on the internet, over the telephone, or through mail. You need to bring these documents to the local DMV. They are: evidence of identity, such as a passport, driver's licence or birth certificate proof of Social Security Number or ineligibility for Social Security Number; proof date of birth; two documents proving New York state residence. You must also have a current photo.
You can verify the status of your new Real ID or enhanced ID on the DMV website. You can also find out how to renew it if you are required to. You should also be aware that a New York enhanced or Real ID will cost more than a regular driver's licence. This is due to the additional security features and appearance. New legislation has been introduced that would allow for the elimination of any transaction fees normally charged to those who have an enhanced or Real ID, but it isn't yet in place. Until then, you should budget accordingly. If you travel often, it is worth getting a Real ID or an enhanced ID. This is especially the case if you are planning to fly domestically. You will feel more safe in airports and your destination with the additional security features.
Real Identification
To obtain an official driver's license you must provide the following documents. These documents will be scanned and verified by the department. Additionally, you will also be required to pass a driving test as well as an identity check. If you fail these tests, then your license will be revoked. In some cases, you may need to submit additional documents. If you have recently changed gender, for instance, you will need an order from the court indicating your gender marker or an official letter from your surgeon who completed the gender change.
In general, people who are applying for an ID card will need to provide two proofs of state residency, one photo and the application fee.
